Profile
The amenities at Gates Park are almost too numerous to count. It’s multiple sports fields (including an artificial turf field) make it a mecca for local teams and regional tournaments. There are courts for tennis and other racquet sports, a playground, picnic tables, the Traboulay PoCo Trail, and more. Port Coquitlam recently dedicated a ball field in Gates Park as Bird Field, in honour of Donna and Walter Bird’s legacy to minor baseball in the city. Gates Park also features public washrooms, change rooms, meeting facilities, and a concession operated by Pajo’s. Gates Park was formerly known as Reeve Park.
Gates Park is a pleasant riverside walk away from Lions Park and is adjacent to Riverside Secondary.
Did You Know: In March 2002, Gates Park was dedicated to the memory of Mike Gates who served as a Port Coquitlam City Councillor from 1980 until his passing in 2000. Mike Gates and his family first moved to Port Coquitlam in the summer of 1942. Growing up in Port Coquitlam, Mike enjoyed all sports but he excelled at lacrosse, winning many awards, and eventually becoming a member of the Lacrosse Hall of Fame. He was also an outstanding soccer goalie. An injury ended his participation in these sports but his love of the game continued. During his time as a City Councillor, Mike Gates was respected for being a ‘straight shooter’ who firmly stood up for those issues he believe in. He was a champion for Port Coquitlam’s athletic programs and felt strongly about promoting minor sports and improving local sports facilities.
