In 2002 the City of Port Moody acquired stewardship of the tidal flats from the Vancouver Port Authority. The tidal flats effectively join the shoreline parks together into one large protected area. The environmentally sensitive tidal flats are home to several species of marine creatures, birds, animals and fish. Several important salmon-bearing streams flow into the tidal flats and inlet.
During low tides, much of the tidal flats are exposed. The mud is very soft in places and tides can rise quickly: caution should be exercised when venturing out onto the tidal flats.
