Profile
The Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre in the Township of Langley, British Columbia is a hub of recreational activity for the community. The centre includes a year-round outdoor aquatic facility which inspired the beach-themed playground as a compliment to the centre’s unique amenities. The playground is eye-catching because of the height of the structures and the colourful lifeguard-beach theme. Three inter-connected towers draw children to heights where they can experience stunning views of the city and the surrounding mountains.
The tallest tower has three levels and an escape route down a 5.4m tube slide. If children aren’t ready to leave the structure, they can navigate through a net bridge to a second lifeguard tower. Both towers are enhanced with decorative elements that add to the beach theme including a lifeguard ring and surfboard. A log tower with a third slide connects to the largest lifeguard tower and to the rest of the space via log beams and rope connections. Multiple points of access and egress give ample choice to children navigating the playscape.
The poured-in-place rubber surfacing is sculpted to represent waves and sand dunes, complete with wooden surfboards on the waves. A small hill slide offers play opportunities for young children who aren’t yet ready to tackle the large playground towers. Seating and trees are strategically designed along the perimeter of the play space to offer a place for rest and observation for children and parents.
