Construction on a new playground and spray park in Moody Park will begin this spring. But it won’t be completed until early next year.

In the meantime kids will have to make due with the existing playground.

The new playground was approved by New West council in December. But the timeframe for construction was presented to council on Monday.

It recommends a two-phase process, with underground servicing work to be completed over eight weeks from mid-March to mid-May. The actual construction of the new playground and spray park won’t begin until early September and is expected to take about 20 weeks.

“This construction schedule allows the playground and spray park to remain open during the summer months,” said the report to council.

The new playground will be comprised of four distinct play areas that include slides, swings, climbing features and water jets, switch gates and weirs. The playground’s concept was developed with feedback from two open houses conducted last summer at the current site, near the corner of Eighth Street and Sixth Avenue.

The playground will provide diverse play opportunities, “from elements that provide physical challenge and opportunities for managed risk-taking, to those that foster creativity,” said a staff report.

The playground is budgeted to cost $890,000.

Moody Park is a multidimensional park that accommodates sports (i.e. soccer, baseball, softball, tennis, basketball & lacrosse boxes) and popular leisure activities through our outdoor pool, playground and spray park.

Other park amenities include public washrooms, trails, benches, picnic tables, waste receptacles, a plaza and open green space with mature trees and beautiful flower beds.

Finally Moody Park is home to New Westminster’s Youth Centre, Century House, Parks, Culture and Recreation Administration Office and the New Westminster Lawn Bowling Club.

Moody Park is a great sports and leisure destination.
