Profile
This park was the first urban trials park in North America. The idea came when a group of youth were noticed riding on the cement blocks in front of Port Moody City Hall. A staff member spoke with the kids who confirmed that they were being shooed away from various sites wherever they tried to practice their sport. It was evident that a better location was needed to accommodate this activity.
A local teacher who specializes in involving youth in the design and development of construction projects was hired to build the park. A Port Moody theme was selected which included the use of obstacles and local elements, such as logs and boulders provided by Parklane Homes and building a platform out of wood provided by Flavelle Cedar Mill to look like the bow of a boat, thus adding a very natural look and feel to the park.
Opened in 2001, the park has been an incredible success. It literally couldn’t be built fast enough, as users swarmed over the construction site to try the stunt obstacles as they were being assembled.
The park is located under the Moody Street overpass, so it is a great park to enjoy even in wet weather. Obstacles are changed frequently.
Everybody wins! Here are some of the benefits:
Reduce the use of public and private plazas, concrete planters and streetscape, as well as property damage.
Provide a safe place for youth to enjoy healthy activities.
Provide a positive outlet for youthful energy.
Allow youth to improve their skills and support the athletic development of Port Moody cyclists who have competed at provincial and national levels.
Helmets are mandatory.
