Profile
La Mosaïque had a vision of a natural playscape for their playground but they were severely constrained by space that was dominated by asphalt. The school wanted a greener landscape with multiple play zones for different types of play where each child could find their own place and activity.
The design that was mobilized includes spaces for quiet contemplation, spaces to interact with friends and places to challenge gross motor development. The featured element is a natural play structure of wood timbers; a smaller-scale log jam® where children can balance, crawl, climb or just hang out. The area for more passive activity includes log benches and a timber teepee. Artificial turf was chosen for the surfacing in this area because the intensive use meant that grass would likely never grow. The site was also designed to be a park setting for neighbourhood gatherings after school hours in this dense urban Toronto neighbourhood.
