Profile
The natural playground at Sackville Park in Toronto is a welcoming green space in the inner city. The nature-focused design of this playground, located just down the road from St. James Park playground, was developed in collaboration with thinc design. The log elements and log jam® climbers that are featured here are reminiscent of a forest waiting to be explored; these elements are at home with the surrounding mature trees. The natural shapes and materials of these climbers and their interconnection is a prime environment for non-prescriptive play. There is no right or wrong way to play here – children are given the freedom to invent patterns of movement, rediscover the playground, and play a different way with each visit. Children can hop, balance, crawl and climb from log to log in a play circuit that offers graduated challenge for younger and older kids.
The accessible rubber surfacing of the playground allows for topography changes along with a junior hill slide. The extra-wide slide is ideal for finding creative ways to slide down solo or with a buddy. Spinners and swings are included in the design to widen the range of play at Sackville Park. The user-driven play culminates at the tower. The modern treehouse-style tower is accessible by a net climber, ladder, and post-and-rope climber; a 6 foot slide is a fun escape back down to ground level to venture back into the play circuit and discover new ways to play.
