Profile
Part of a new community facility and developed in collaboration with CLH Design, the playground at E. Carroll Joyner Park speaks to the history of the site as a working farm until the late 20th century. The pastoral character of the park is reflected in the playground theme and design of the equipment. This playground is also a playful and colourful take on the old saying “The early bird catches the worm.” The Joyner Park bird carving sculptures – alongside the inchworm – are unique, playable pieces of art that represent two species common to the region: cardinals and blue jays.
A two-level tower inspired by the farm structures that are present on-site is situated in the senior area of the playground and is connected to the pathway by an accessible bridge. The tower features two slides and is connected to a large Log Jam® climber to create a continuous play circuit. A blue jay sits off to the side of this area as a stand-alone play piece.
The junior area of this playground tells the whimsical story of the little cardinal and the giant worm. The cardinal perched on a log keeps its eyes on the bright green inchworm peeking through the soil. These playable chainsaw-carved sculptures are complemented by a bird house play hut and tall log post blades of grass.
